The Fenelon Elevator is a 70,000-word novel about a 16-year-old girl who goes in search of her father’s killer.

In May of 1933, Kitty Moss’s father, a Baptist minister, was killed by Clem Cookson, a grifter and roustabout. The police in Wayland, Massachusetts release Mr. Cookson, which enrages Kitty and makes her vow to take justice into her own hands. She recruits Briscoe Kane, an aging police officer with an alcohol problem, and Phyllis Buckle, a youthful insurance detective, to help her track Cookson down.

Their search takes them along U.S. Route 20, from Wayland to Dubuque, Iowa, where the search ends on the Fenelon Elevator, known locally as the shortest and steepest scenic rail line in the world. Phyllis and Clem Cookson are killed and Kitty and Officer Kane are injured. Kitty returns home, relieved that she has avenged her father but devastated by the death and injury she has caused.
